Flames Threaten 300 Years of History—Will the Beloved Landmark Rise From the Ashes?
A frightening fire broke out Friday, October 9, at the historic William Penn Inn in Lower Gwynedd Township, threatening a landmark that has been part of Montgomery County's history since 1714.
The fire reportedly started in the basement kitchen and traveled through ductwork toward the roof. Fortunately, firefighters contained the flames, limiting damage to the building. No injuries were reported.
But this wasn't just another building fire. For generations, the William Penn Inn has been more than a restaurant. It's where couples have celebrated weddings, sweethearts have popped the question, and families have gathered for anniversaries, birthdays, and unforgettable milestones. For many Montgomery County residents, its walls hold a lifetime of cherished memories.
The good news? This treasured landmark is still standing! The inn remains closed until further notice while restoration and inspections take place. After more than 300 years of history, the William Penn Inn has another chapter to add to its remarkable story.
