Annual Toll Hike Aims to Support State Infrastructure Funding |
Motorists in the Glenside area will encounter a 4% increase in Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls beginning Sunday, January 4, 2026.
This adjustment affects both E-ZPass and Toll By Plate users, aligning with the mandates of Act 44 of 2007, which requires the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to implement annual toll increases to fund statewide infrastructure projects.
The Commission approved this increase at their July 1 meeting, marking the lowest rate hike since 2014.
Officials emphasized that the additional revenue will be entirely allocated to repaying Act 44 debt service.
Previously, tolls rose by 5% in both 2024 and 2025.
Looking ahead, the Commission plans to reduce the annual increase to 3.5% in 2027 and 3% by 2028.
For the mainline and Northeast Extension of the Turnpike, where tolls are calculated based on distance traveled, the per-mile rate will increase from $0.07 to $0.073, and the segment fee will rise from $1.09 to $1.13.
On other extensions lacking per-segment tolling infrastructure, a straightforward 4% increase will be applied to existing rates.
In 2026, the most common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from $1.86 to $1.94 for E-ZPass customers and from $3.72 to $3.88 for Toll By Plate users.
For Class-5 tractor trailers, the toll will rise from $23.16 to $24.12 for E-ZPass and from $46.32 to $48.24 for Toll By Plate.
In related local developments, the Regency at Rydal Woods, a 150-unit 55+ community in nearby Jenkintown, is expected to open by spring 2026.
This new development may influence traffic patterns and toll usage in the Glenside area.
Residents are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and consider the impact of the toll increase on their commuting expenses. |
