Data Center Debate Draws Massive Crowd
Community Opposition Grows Over Data Center Plan
More than 1,000 residents recently packed a public hearing to voice concerns about a proposed data center complex planned for the former Cleveland-Cliffs steel mill property near Plymouth Township. The project, which could become one of the largest data center developments in the country, has sparked strong opposition from residents, local officials, and community groups.
Developers are seeking approval to build a 2.2-million-square-foot facility on a 66-acre industrial site. While supporters point to potential economic benefits, opponents have raised concerns about increased energy consumption, environmental impacts, traffic, noise, and the long-term effect on surrounding neighborhoods.
The proposal has already faced challenges, including a previous recommendation against the project from the local planning commission. Due to the expected public interest, township officials have scheduled the next hearing for June 25 at Colonial Middle School, a venue chosen to accommodate larger crowds.
The hearing will focus on testimony and evidence related to the project, with additional meetings expected in the months ahead. As discussions continue, many residents are calling for greater transparency and careful consideration before any final decisions are made. |
