High Winds Leave Thousands Without Power in Montgomery County

Severe gusts cause widespread outages and emergency responses across the region

Severe high winds swept through Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, causing significant disruptions and leaving thousands without power. Emergency services were inundated with calls reporting road obstructions and outdoor electrical fires.

Between 12 p.m. Monday and 12 p.m. Tuesday, the county's emergency communications division received over 100 weather-related calls. These included 83 reports of road obstructions and 25 incidents of outdoor electrical fires, according to Todd Stieritz, deputy director of public affairs for the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety.

The high winds led to widespread power outages across the region. As of Tuesday afternoon, approximately 383 PECO customers in Montgomery County remained without electricity. The hardest-hit areas included Whitemarsh Township with 137 outages, Lower Merion Township with 79, and Whitpain Township with 67. Other affected areas were Cheltenham Township (33 outages), Perkiomen Township (22), and Conshohocken (5). Additional outages were reported in Pottstown, Limerick, Montgomery, Skippack, Upper Dublin, Upper Merion, Upper Moreland, Upper Providence, and Worcester townships.

In response to the severe weather, Montgomery County extended its Code Blue Cold Weather Emergency through January 4, 2026. This declaration aims to provide shelter and resources to vulnerable populations during extreme cold conditions.

Residents are urged to exercise caution during high wind events. The Montgomery County Department of Public Safety advises staying indoors, securing outdoor objects, and avoiding downed power lines. In case of power outages, residents should contact their utility provider directly and refrain from calling 911 unless there is a life-threatening emergency.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor weather conditions and will provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety guidelines during severe weather events.
