A mistrial has been declared in the first-degree murder trial of Nathan Blose, an inmate at SCI Phoenix in Skippack Township, formerly known as Graterford Prison.

The trial, which began earlier this week, was abruptly halted when it was revealed that the coroner's office possessed additional information not previously disclosed to the prosecution or defense.

This oversight led the presiding judge to declare a mistrial, emphasizing the necessity for all evidence to be shared to ensure a fair trial.

Blose, 41, stands accused of the 2024 murder of his cellmate, 45-year-old Shaun Harden.

Prosecutors presented surveillance footage indicating that both men were alone in their cell on the night of October 31, 2024.

The following morning, Harden was discovered deceased, partially covered by a bedsheet.

An autopsy revealed significant injuries, including neck hemorrhaging and extensive bruising, consistent with a severe beating.

The defense highlighted procedural lapses, noting that the guard responsible for routine checks failed to perform them that night.

They also pointed out that Harden had been airlifted from another facility 27 days prior due to internal injuries from a previous assault, suggesting these injuries could have contributed to his death.

Both inmates had prior convictions: Blose for firearms violations and assaulting a police officer, and Harden for child molestation.

The trial has been rescheduled for April, allowing time for all evidence to be properly reviewed and disclosed.

This case underscores the complexities of ensuring justice within the prison system and the critical importance of procedural integrity in legal proceedings.
