Local Police K-9 Teams in Montgomery Township Achieve Elite National Certifications |

Two Montgomery Township Police K-9 teams were recognized Monday evening for earning their 2025 certifications through the United States Police Canine Association.
The honors were presented during a township supervisors meeting by Officer Robert Ungurean of the Upper Southampton Police Department, who serves as president of U.S. Police Canine Association Region 6. Ungurean explained that the organization is the nation’s oldest and largest certifying body for police K-9 units and recognizes teams that successfully complete all required certifications within a calendar year. Montgomery Township’s two police dogs are trained in narcotics detection and also earned certifications in patrol work and tracking — a combination that requires passing several rigorous tests designed to simulate real-world situations.
Narcotics certification involves searching vehicles and buildings for hidden drug scents, while tracking tests require dogs to follow scent trails of roughly 75 to 150 yards that include turns and distractions. Patrol certification includes obedience drills, controlled searches for concealed suspects, and apprehension scenarios where handlers must safely deploy and recall their dogs.
Ungurean said the accomplishment is rare. Region 6 has about 145 members and roughly 100 eligible dogs, but only four teams completed all three certifications last year — including the two from Montgomery Township. He praised the department’s K-9 unit, saying the achievement reflects the dedication and training required to maintain a strong canine program. |
