Raising the Flag
Montgomery County Marks Juneteenth and Its Lasting Legacy
Montgomery County Prepares to Honor Juneteenth with Annual Flag Raising
Montgomery County officials have announced plans for their annual Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony in Norristown, continuing a tradition that recognizes the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and community. The ceremony will bring together county leaders, residents, and community organizations to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Across Montgomery County, the observance serves as both a celebration of progress and an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equality and opportunity.
County officials say the annual flag raising helps educate residents about an important chapter in American history while fostering community engagement and dialogue. The event is part of a broader series of Juneteenth activities taking place throughout the county in the coming weeks.
