Sheetz has officially planted its flag in Montgomery County, opening its first location in what many consider longtime Wawa country. The Altoona-based convenience chain debuted its new store Thursday at 454 West Ridge Pike in Limerick — directly across from an existing Wawa — intensifying Pennsylvania’s well-known convenience store rivalry.
Doors opened at 8 a.m., drawing a large crowd eager to experience Sheetz’s expansion into southeastern Pennsylvania. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the occasion, and customers lined up well before opening for raffle entries, promotional giveaways, and free merchandise. Throughout the day, the store remained busy, with steady food orders and packed gas pumps. To celebrate, Sheetz offered free coffee and soda and encouraged visitors to donate canned goods for Philabundance.
For many attendees, the opening felt personal. Some traveled significant distances, citing nostalgia and loyalty to the brand. One customer drove an hour to grab sandwiches and coffee, praising Sheetz’s broader menu selection compared to competitors. Others said the new location introduces healthy competition that could benefit consumers by expanding choices and encouraging innovation.
Not everyone welcomed the newcomer. Across the street, some loyal Wawa customers expressed skepticism, arguing that Sheetz is more at home in western Pennsylvania. Still, supporters believe the competition may push both companies to elevate their offerings.
Early arrivals included fans eager for bragging rights as the first in line, while others simply wanted to sample favorite menu items like chili cheese dogs. Whether firmly Team Sheetz, Team Wawa, or somewhere in between, residents agree on one thing: the rivalry has entered a new chapter in Montgomery County.
