Distracted Driving Still a Major Concern Across Southeastern Pennsylvania |
Montgomery and neighboring counties rank among the highest for violations as officials highlight ongoing safety risks. |
Distracted driving continues to pose a serious safety issue across southeastern Pennsylvania, with several local counties ranking among the highest in the state for violations. According to a recent statewide report analyzing data from 2021 through 2025, more than 9,700 distracted-driving cases were recorded, including 1,784 incidents in 2025 alone.
Montgomery County accounted for roughly 8% of last year’s cases, placing it among the top offenders alongside Berks, Chester, and Delaware counties. Berks County led the region with nearly 9% of violations, while Chester and Delaware counties each contributed about 5%.
The report tracks a range of infractions, including texting while driving, using handheld devices, and wearing headphones behind the wheel. Texting violations—defined as sending, reading, or typing messages—remain one of the most common offenses and carry a base fine of $50, not including additional fees.
Data trends also reveal that drivers in their 20s and 30s are most frequently cited, with incidents peaking during mid-afternoon hours between 2 and 4 p.m.
Despite ongoing awareness efforts, officials say the numbers highlight a continued need for safer driving habits across the region. |
